Abstract:

Quantum sensors and optical atomic clocks provide unsurpassed performance for precision navigation and timing applications.  Moving these systems out of the lab and into practical applications will require significant reductions in size, weight and power of the required optical systems.  Integrated photonics will play a key role in futures by providing the necessary SWaP reduction, while also improving reliability, yield and robustness of the optical systems.  I will review a number of projects we have been pursuing at Sandia to develop integrated photonic devices to address the needs of quantum sensing technology utilizing CMOS compatible fabrication for high yield and manufacturability.

Biography:

Michael Gehl is a principle member of technical staff at Sandia National Labs.  He has been involved in the development of CMOS compatible integrated photonic technologies since joining Sandia in 2015.  His research includes the design, fabrication and testing of novel integrated photonic devices to address applications in high frequency RF photonic processing, cryogenic photonic interconnects and quantum information and sensing.
